10 Simple Spring Cleaning Tips

Here are a few simple spring cleaning tips for kitchen appliances.  The good news is there is no need to go out and buy expensive cleaners that often smell bad and require rubber gloves to protect the skin.

Appliances work hard and users take them for granted.  Give them a little TLC to keep them looking new and shiny.  Clean appliances work more efficiently.  In some cases, like with grease build up on cooking appliances, failure to clean can be a fire hazard.

Here are 10 unique ideas that make spring cleaning in the kitchen much easier and less expensive.  Many of the products required can be found in the pantry:

·         Remove stains in the microwave – use baking soda and water mixture

·         For stubborn stains in the microwave – heat a bowl of vanilla extract about 3 minutes and use it to wipe the interior and remove odor

·         Eliminate odors – wipe down the inside of the refrigerator with vanilla extract and a paper towel

·         Remove stains on racks – soak removable parts like racks and drawers in warm soapy water to loosen debris and food stains

·         Improve Refrigerator Performance – keep it working efficiently by cleaning the condenser coils (behind or under the unit) with a long handled brush and hand-held vacuum to remove dust, pet hair and dirt.

·         Clean the dishwasher – remove food residue by running the empty dishwasher with white vinegar

·         Clean outside of white appliances – remove yellowing by wiping down with a sponge dipped in a mixture of bleach, baking soda and water

·         Clean oven racks – soak in warm soapy water then wash by hand to remove baked on food

·         Eliminate odors in the garbage disposal – put some ice cubes and citrus peels in the disposal, run with cold water 30 seconds.  Turn off, rinse with hot water.

·         Grease accumulation in the garbage disposal – put about a tablespoon of dish detergent into the disposal then run with hot water 30 seconds.  Turn off and let hot water run until suds rinse away.

Keep the kitchen drain clean and free from food debris and grease build-up by attacking it at its source:  the dishwasher and the garbage disposal.
